Ben Ellsworth, owner and founder of Kauai Sporting Clays was raised in Orem, Utah. Growing up in Utah offered a multitude of activities and Ben became a natural Outdoorsman. An avid skier, bird hunter, fisherman, as well as multi-sport athlete, you would rarely see him indoors while the sun was up.
Ben was drafted right out of high school in the 16th round by the St. Louis Cardinals and played in their system for 6 years as an infielder. He enjoyed seeing the country and making new friends from all over the world.
In 1999, Ben moved to Kauai to join his family’s charter fishing business. He quickly adapted to island life and the ocean, becoming one of a very few charter boat captains on the island. He successfully ran the boats and helped thousands of vacationers fulfill their dream of catching a Pacific Blue Marlin, Ahi, Ono, or Mahi Mahi.
In 2010, Ben’s time in the Hawaii tourism industry fostered his desire to start a family friendly sporting clay business based on the shooting skill set he acquired as a youth. His goal was to create a gun club that would welcome tourists and locals alike. He wanted to share his love for shooting while inspiring others to appreciate and understand clay shooting as a relaxing and entertaining sport.
In 2012, with the support of close friends, Ben founded Kauai Sporting Clays. His skill as a shooter, his passion for making the sport easily accessible, and his ability to communicate his love for the sport to others, has made the club the success it is today. To date, Ben has personally taught over 15,000 new shooters gun safety and proven, instinctive shooting methods.
Ben’s God-given talents have helped him to excel in everything thing he sets his mind to. He has won rodeos as a Team Roper, played in 2 U.S. Open golf qualifiers, as well as the following awards in his short clay shooting career:
